Introduction to the National Ranking System
Many members have asked about how the National Ranking System works. Many of you will have noticed that your ranking seems to go up and down in big steps, or that you disappear then re-appear. For this reason I thought an explanation would be the best way to answer these questions.
In the first year that you appear on the list you will be amongst many new players. At this stage many players appear with the same number of points as you. It could be as many as 50 or even a 100 with similar points. This is why in the first year your ranking can go up and down more rapidly. As you get more points and settle in your ranking will become steady. This usually happens in year 2 onwards.
If your name appears, disappears and re-appears again this is because you may have gone into negative points or not played in an event for 5 months. Going into negative points usually happens in the early months or during the first year. Again don't worry as you are still on the national ranking list. The ETTA just don't show players with negative points or of they haven't competed for a while.
As mention above once you commence your 2nd year as a ranked player competing in events such as the National League your ranking will become steady with smaller movements in either direction.
Another question asked is how are points gained or lost. basically if you beat someone on the list you gain points, they loose points. If you loose to someone then you loose points, they gain points. The amount of points won or lost depends on both your position, and theirs, based on the previous months list.
To get more chances to gain points you could also enter a few tournaments which are approved by the ETTA. Again ranking points can be earned or lost! based on the system above. Its always , as a developing player, worth gambling a few points to enter other events in order to gain experience. This will reap rewards later on.
I hope that answers your questions. If not then do let me know and will try and help.
