Junior Umpires Awards Scheme

Introduction

 

 

The Junior Umpire Award is open to all young people. Recently revised, it is designed to improve knowledge and test practical skills in the umpiring of table tennis.

The awards may be used as part of the General Certificate of Secondary Education (GCSE) Table Tennis, Sport Leaders Uk awards (formerly CSLA), Duke of Edinburgh Awards, and TT Networker – Table Tennis Youth Leadership Award.

There is no minimum age restriction and playing experience is not required.

Umpiring can be a most rewarding and enjoyable experience and England has some of the most highly respected umpires in the world. Opportunities to use umpiring skills are available in clubs, leagues and in many competitions across England . The ambitious can umpire abroad at international matches, world championships and even at the Olympic Games.

Assessment

The award may be assessed by any teacher, sports leader, TT Networker, coach or adult who has an understanding of the laws of table tennis. Candidates should be given a copy of the ITTF Laws of Table Tennis to help them identify the answers. A copy of the ITTF Handbook, including the Laws and Regulations, is available to download from the ITTF website.

Assessors can obtain a free JUA Information Pack, which includes the answers to the test paper, from the ETTA or their Regional Development Officer.

The assessment is in two parts:

Written or oral

Candidates must achieve 16 out of a maximum 22 marks.

Practical

In the opinion of the assessor candidates must satisfactorily demonstrate umpire skills detailed in the practical test.

Certificates and further information

Successful candidates will receive:

  • An official ETTA certificate recognising the award.
  • Ideas and contacts on how to progress in umpiring.

Certificates can be obtained by completing the awards order form (JUA2) and sending the correct remittance to the ETTA.

 

Club Members

 

If you wish to have a go at this award please download the documents below and complete the test paper. You are advised to use the ITTF Laws of Table Tennis when selecting your answers to the questions. Once completed check your answers and then bring the completed test paper to club for marking. Once you have passed the Test Paper you will be required to umpire a couple of matches and once completed satisfactory you will be granted your award on receipt of the current award fee of £2.00.
